I have suffered the same problem with my last 3 downloaded audiobooks. Today I downloaded the audiobook from the Audible website in the "Enhanced" Audio Quality format rather than "Format 4". When I imported that version of the audiobook from ITunes into my Ipod Nano Library, it now seems to play fine.

Enhanced was showing form my Audible downloads - but not until I checked the get info/file did I realize that it was still Format 4. I went into my Audible library and set it to Format 4 and then back to Enhanced - I now am downloading the aax files - the enhanced version - this is immediately obvious in iTunes as the audiobook image is clear, not fuzzy... and it does work on my iPod Classic! Yes!
